Sigh No More by Mumford & Sons
Label:
Universal / Island
Released:
05 October 2009
This album is probably one of the best albums to be released in the last 12 months, and certainly my personal favourite. Every song is lyrical and displays the talent of this group of fascinating musicians. With a definite Irish folk sound influence (it's hard to believe the guys are all Londoners) Mumford and Sons have taken the festival scene by storm this summer and have seen Sigh no More, their debut album nominated for a Mercury Prize. I am absolutely sure they deserve to win it.
It is hard to know which track to single out as the best song, as all of them are outstandingly good and an absolute joy to listen too. I never skip any of the tracks, often with the hairs standing up on the back of my neck, and sometimes with a lump in my throat. With our family of three teenage children, we love to listen to it on road trips (and we bought the musical score to see if we could copy any of the songs - what fun we've had). It is full of uplifting sounds such as Roll Away Your Stone and Awake My Soul, which both have a fantastic acoustic rhythm accompanied by a banjo, that are just impossible to copy and is mesmerising to watch live. Sigh no more, the title track, is melodramatic, and full of deep philosophical meaning (as are most of the songs). Listen to the sample tracks if you don't believe how good it is - the trouble is they keep cutting out and you will just want the whole album there and then. I think if I was to choose a personal favourite, it is the melancholic ballad 'Dust Bowl Ballad', but for live performance 'The Cave' is an outstanding, especially the instrument crescendo that loses the boys into a trance like state rarely seen in modern musicians but a sign of their true creative genius. Buy it today, and buy a copy for all the people you love for Christmas - better than any antidepressant.
