Lioness: Hidden Treasures by Amy Winehouse

  • Label: Island Records
  • Released: 05 December 2011
  • After the untimely death of Amy Winehouse in July 2011 producers Mark Ronson and Salaam Remi, who had worked closely with the singer during her short career, have brought us this appropriately titled album, Lioness - Hidden Treasures released on 5th December 2011. Amy Winehouse, she with the inimitable voice, the reckless attitude to life, the torment of addictions and demons, collected accolades and awards that other artists can only dream of. Amy could write her own material and could pick up any song in almost genre and make it her own, but it was probably as a jazz singer that her talent was most apparent.

The emergence of her talent, from her early days as a singer up to her latest release, is clear on this album. The opener is her reggae style cover of "Our Day Will Come". It's light, playful, cheeky and so optimistic and followed by the soul sound of her 2008 recording of "Between the Cheats" just a year after her disastrous marriage to Blake Fielder-Civil. The highlight of the album could be the beautiful duet with Tony Bennet "Body and Soul". What makes this track so significant is that this is Amy at her best, singing with someone she truly admired, this is class, a hint of her true potential, a glimpse of what might have been. The album ends with the poignant "A Song for You". Sadly this album is an epitaph, and an epitaph can only dwell on what we already know and already admire about this highly talented, gifted singer. We will never know what Amy Winehouse might have become.
