Blues Funeral by Mark Lanegan Band
Label:
4AD
Released:
06 February 2012
If you are a fan of Mark Lanegan this is what you have been waiting for since Bubblegum in 2004 and if you haven't listened to him you will be a fan just as soon as you hear this. This is a superb solo album - some may go as far as to call it a masterpiece. Why? Well it's all about Lanegan's baritone voice, a deep, smoky gravelly sound. Lanegan can sing anything and make it his own. There's always that feeling that he sings for himself, to himself and you, the listener can make up your own mind. The album is melancholy, at times despairing, embracing death and sorrow and then soaring to hope and optimism. There are twelve tracks with contributions from guitarist Alain Johannes and drummer Jack Irons and a mix of gospel, blues and rock, but ultimately it is a showcase for Lanegan, a man who has been chased by demons throughout his career - and survived-so far. It could be difficult to find a "standalone" track although Ode To Sad Disco, Harbourview Hospital and Quiver Syndrome are up there at the top of my list. Produced by Alain Johannes this album is stunning. Album of the Year? Who knows but it certainly gets my vote.
